About the Position
EMS Ingénierie is seeking a Technical Director – Building Structures who will play a key role in the technical development and excellence of our team.
In this role, you will act as a technical reference in structural engineering, supporting teams in designing high-performance and sustainable solutions across a wide range of projects. You will actively contribute to improving design practices, developing the team’s technical skills, and delivering high-quality structural projects.
Your expertise will ensure the technical rigor of our projects while supporting the evolution of structural expertise at EMS.
Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Serve as a technical resource in building structure for project teams.
- Support engineers and technicians in analyzing and resolving complex structural challenges.
- Participate in developing and updating the organization’s technical standards and practices.
- Ensure the quality, consistency, and technical compliance of structural designs.
- Actively contribute to developing the team’s technical skills through mentoring and coaching.
Project Execution
- Lead and manage projects under your responsibility.
- Participate in the design and validation of structural solutions for building projects (institutional, commercial, industrial, or residential).
- Determine appropriate structural systems based on technical, architectural, and budget constraints.
- Collaborate closely with other disciplines involved in the projects (civil, mechanical, architecture, geotechnical, etc.).
- Oversee the preparation of structural analyses, drawings, and specifications.
- Help ensure compliance with schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
- Attend coordination meetings and perform site visits when required.
Internal Development and Contribution to Growth
- Actively contribute to the development and visibility of building structure expertise within EMS.
- Support business development by identifying opportunities, helping prepare service proposals, and maintaining client relationships.
- Support the internal development of the team by sharing technical knowledge and fostering the growth of engineers and technicians.
- Contribute to improving and structuring internal tools, practices, and processes related to structural engineering.
- Participate in strategic discussions regarding the growth and positioning of the building structure team.
- Work with management in developing and strengthening the company’s structural expertise.
The person we are looking for :
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or construction engineering
- Member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ)
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in building structures
- Strong knowledge of applicable standards and codes (National Building Code, CSA S16, concrete, wood, etc.)
- Experience in the design and supervision of structural projects
- Demonstrated technical leadership and interest in team development
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment
- Excellent communication skills and collaborative mindset
- Rigor, professional judgment, and strong sense of responsibility
